| Date & Time Functions
Holly has undergone 11 months of extensive Chemotherapy treatment to date, with limited success. She has undergone surgery which was successful in removing the primary tumour (size of an orange) located above her Kidney. Unfortunately the subsequent Chemotherapy treatment has not totally removed the cancer from her system and she will now travel to the UK in the coming weeks for a more specialised ‘MIBG’ Radiotherapy treatment which is only available there. Holly’s parents have been given a strong indication that this treatment should eradicate the cancer from her system. In order to explain in more detail what Holly is suffering from and how the donations will help, I include herewith details of same for your information. Neuroblastoma is a very aggressive form of cancer that starts in certain types of very primitive developing nerve cells found in an embryo or fetes. (The term neuro indicates "nerves," while blastoma refers to a cancer that affects immature or developing cells). This type of cancer occurs mainly in infants and young children and is rarely found in children older than 10 years of age. One in one hundred thousand children are affected by this Cancer in Ireland every year. Holly O'Keeffe is at a 'Stage 4' of this cancer which means, the cancer has spread from its primary source (tumour located above her Kidney) to 3 other tumours located in her head. While Holly appeared to be respond well to the treatment initially, doctors on the onset have given Holly a 30% chance of survival. All donations will go to fund treatment for Holly if required; either in the UK or at the Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York should her treatment in Ireland prove unsuccessful. If Holly does not require financial assistance with her treatment, then all monies raised will be donated to Our Ladies Hospital for sick Children, Cancer Unit in Crumlin, the Cancer Unit in the Mercy Hospital Cork, and the 'Angels for Hope Foundation', which is a foundation set up to raise funds to produce a vaccine to stop the Neuroblastoma Cancer reoccurring in cancer patients. thank you for your heartfelt messages and prayers. | | 8 Mar 2010 | |
